PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

This lecture, recorded during a 2022 Review Course & Clinical Update, provides education about the most important principles involved in the care of older adults. Learn about the principles of aging, how to screen for common health concerns in older adults, and how to perform annual wellness visits for this population.


FORMAT

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be able to:

  1. Discuss the five principles of aging in older adults: new onset of disease, side effects of medications, geriatric syndromes, normal assessment findings, and prevention of disease processes.
  2. Describe the importance of screening for common age-related health concerns, such as alcohol use, depression, cardiovascular disease, vision and hearing, and falls, as well as understanding the differences in primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention.
  3. State the mandatory components of an annual wellness visit, describe the assessment of the older adult, and discuss the identification of appropriate immunizations with consideration of underlying medical conditions and side effects.

CREDITS

This activity is approved for 2.25 contact hours (includes 0.5 hour of pharmacology).
